John Cadwalader (1742-1787) was a Philadelphia lawyer, merchant and Continental Army officer, and this mezzotint shows him in a bust portrait turned to the right, a pose that was standard for formal likenesses of the period. Mezzotint was a labor-intensive engraving method that could render soft gradations of light and shadow, which made it popular for portraits of prominent colonial and early republic figures. The caption card records no date, so the print's exact year of production is uncertain. Cadwalader's own career, including his role as a Pennsylvania militia and Continental officer during the Revolution, gives the image its historical weight.
