Three years after his death in 1851, John James Audubon is honored in this oval memorial portrait, with small bird vignettes framing his head and shoulders. The wood engraving appeared in *Gleason's Pictorial*, a Boston illustrated weekly that printed engraved likenesses of notable people. Audubon's reputation rests on *The Birds of America*, a large series of hand-colored bird plates issued in London between 1827 and 1838 that made him famous on both sides of the Atlantic. The bird motifs around his profile tie the portrait directly to that lifework.
