John L. Lewis, the longtime president of the United Mine Workers of America, sits for this head-and-shoulders portrait taken by the Washington studio Miller, which made many formal photographs of officials and public figures in the postwar capital. Lewis led the union from 1920 to 1960 and was among the most forceful labor leaders of the twentieth century, known for his bargaining fights with coal operators and for his deep, rumbling voice and heavy brows. The print dates to the early 1950s, when he was pressing for better wages and benefits for miners, and the three-quarter angle he adopts here is typical of the dignified studio style used for official portraits of the period.
