The sitter is William Lane Rehm, who was briefly married to the writer Janet Flanner, later known for her long run as Paris correspondent for *The New Yorker* under the pen name Genêt. This 1917 head-and-shoulders portrait shows him turned slightly to the right, a conventional studio pose of the period. The print belongs to the Janet Flanner and Solita Solano papers at the Library of Congress, and it is cited in Brenda Wineapple's 1989 biography of Flanner, which makes it a useful reference for readers tracing her early personal life.
