Hubert H. Humphrey is shown here in a head-and-shoulders study, turned slightly to the right, a format that suited the official portraits gathered for the Library of Congress's Congressional Portrait Collection. Humphrey (1911-1978) served as a senator from Minnesota and as vice president under Lyndon Johnson, and he twice sought the presidency, losing the 1968 election to Richard Nixon. The date of this print is given as about 1970, a period when he had returned to the Senate after his years as vice president and remained one of the most recognizable voices in the Democratic Party.
