Shown in a tight head-and-shoulders view, turned slightly to the right, this portrait presents Lt. Gen. James H. Doolittle at a time when he was one of the best-known airmen in the country. He had led the April 1942 raid on Tokyo, the first American strike on the Japanese home islands, which gave the public an early wartime hero. The print comes from the Maurice Constant Collection, and its probable date of May 1945 places it near the end of the war in Europe, when Doolittle held senior command of Eighth Air Force operations. Wartime portraits like this one were commonly distributed to newspapers and public audiences.
