Shown in a head-and-shoulders view, turned slightly to the right and wearing a hat, Gifford Pinchot appears in this portrait dated around 1940, several years before his death. Pinchot is best known as the first chief of the U.S. Forest Service, a post he held from 1905 to 1910 under Theodore Roosevelt, and he later served two nonconsecutive terms as governor of Pennsylvania. The print comes from the Pinchot Collection, a group of materials assembled around his name that documents his long career in conservation and public life.
