Catherine M. Flanagan is shown here in a head-and-shoulders portrait turned slightly to the right, a format popular with studio sitters in the 1910s. The print belongs to the records of the National Woman's Party, which grew out of the Congressional Union in 1913 and campaigned for a federal woman suffrage amendment through pickets, marches and public lobbying. Portraits like this were commonly exchanged among members and reproduced to put faces to the cause. The record does not state her specific role, so the picture is best read as part of that wider effort.
