Sexton is shown in a close head-and-shoulders view, turned slightly to the right, a composed study that suits the poet who became known for her candid, confessional verse. Born in 1928, she began publishing in the late 1950s with *To Bedlam and Part Way Back*, and her later collections, including *Live or Die*, brought her the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1967, the year this portrait was made. Publicity and press photographs from that period often served to introduce writers to newspaper readers, and this one reflects how a poet of her profile was presented to the public at the height of her fame.
