Shown in a head-and-shoulders view turned slightly to the right, James L. Buckley appears here during his first term in the U.S. Senate, a seat he won in 1970 on the Conservative Party line and held until 1977. The portrait is part of the Library of Congress's Congressional Portrait Collection, a body of photographs of members of Congress made for official and archival use. Buckley was the brother of the writer William F. Buckley Jr., and the two brothers' public profiles drew attention in the early 1970s. The picture offers a plain, formal record of a senator of that period.
