Autographed by its subject, this head-and-shoulders portrait shows the writer Ruth McEnery Stuart turned slightly to the right, a pose that sets it apart from more rigid studio views. Stuart, who lived from 1856 to 1917, was a Louisiana-born author best known for local color stories that rendered Southern speech and rural life with affection and humor. The print was made by the Schloss studio in New York between 1900 and 1910, a period when portraits of authors often circulated in magazines and books.
