Daniel Webster is shown head and shoulders, turned slightly to the right, in a pose that suits the statesman's reputation for grave, deliberate presence. The image reproduces a painting by James Reid Lambdin, a portrait painter active in the 1840s, when Webster was one of the country's best-known orators and a central figure in debates over the Union. Webster, a senator from Massachusetts who also served as Secretary of State, died in 1852. The photoprint was made sometime between 1880 and 1940, so it records how the painted likeness was copied and circulated long after the sitter's death.
