Walt Whitman appears here in a head-and-shoulders study, turned to the right and wearing a hat, a pose that differs from the more formal frontal likenesses that made him familiar to readers. The photograph dates to 1863, a year when Whitman was in Washington, D.C., tending wounded soldiers in the army hospitals while he worked on the poems that would appear in later editions of *Leaves of Grass*. The print belongs to the Feinberg-Whitman Collection at the Library of Congress, where it is catalogued as Saunders no. 19, and it was later shown in the National Portrait Gallery's 2006 exhibition *One Life: Walt Whitman*.
