Abel D. Streight is shown here in a head-and-shoulders view turned to the right, the plain studio format that was common for Civil War-era portraits. Streight, an Indiana colonel, led a mounted Union raid through northern Alabama and Georgia in the spring of 1863, aimed at cutting Confederate rail lines. The raid ended in surrender to Nathan Bedford Forrest, and Streight was later held at Libby Prison in Richmond, from which he escaped in 1864 through a tunnel with other officers. Portraits like this were widely exchanged among soldiers and their families, and the Library's Civil War collection preserves many such images as a record of the men who served.
