Henry Elias Howland appears here in a head-and-shoulders portrait turned to the right, rendered as a steel engraving by the New York firm E.G. Williams & Bro. Steel plates held up far better than copper under long print runs, which made them a common choice for portraits reproduced in books and periodicals in the decades around 1900. The record dates the piece only to between 1880 and 1910, so the exact occasion for the portrait is not known. Its value lies in showing how engravers of the period handled the sitter's face, dress and light, offering a view of how notable Americans were presented to the public before halftone photo reproduction took over.
