Turned to the right and cropped at the shoulders, this portrait shows Albert Einstein in the decade before his death in 1955, when he was working at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey. The record credits H. Landshoff as copyright holder and dates the photograph to between 1946 and 1950, with a later printing around 1979, which reflects how often such images were reproduced in books. By then Einstein was the world's best-known scientist, and his untamed hair and direct gaze made him a favorite subject for photographers and editors alike.
