Albert Einstein sits turned to his left in this head-and-shoulders study, a pose that shows the profile of his face, the famously unruly hair, and the mustache that defined his later public image. The portrait dates to around 1945, when Einstein was in his mid-sixties and had spent more than a decade in the United States after leaving Germany in 1933. The Library of Congress holds it under a copyright registration by New York photographer John D. Schiff, one of the many studio portraits made of Einstein during the 1940s as his fame as a scientist and public voice on nuclear arms grew.
