The subject is James McNeill Whistler, shown in a head-and-shoulders view turned to the left, but this print is a photographic reproduction of a pencil drawing by Thomas R. Way, not a photograph of the artist himself. Way was a London lithographer who worked closely with Whistler on his prints, so the drawing reflects a working relationship rather than a formal studio sitting. The reproduction was made sometime between 1903, the year Whistler died, and 1926. It comes from the Joseph and Elizabeth Robins Pennell Collection of Whistleriana, the material the Pennells gathered while writing their biographies of the painter. Their collection is a useful record of how Whistler was remembered in the years after his death.
