Turned to the left, Maj. Gen. Patrick Ronayne Cleburne appears in this engraved head-and-shoulders portrait, the likeness of a Confederate officer whose path to the South began in Ireland. Born in County Cork in 1828, he emigrated to Arkansas, worked as a pharmacist, and rose to command a division in the Army of Tennessee, earning the nickname "Stonewall of the West." He was killed leading an assault at Franklin, Tennessee, in November 1864, and the print's undated range of 1860 to 1870 suggests it circulated around the time of his death.
