Few pictures of Hamilton Fish survive from the 1910s with a clear copyright record like this one, which suggests it was circulated as a commercial portrait. Fish (1849-1936) was a Republican congressman from New York in the years around 1910, and he came from a prominent family: he was the grandson of Secretary of State Hamilton Fish. Portraits like this one, taken for public distribution, were how many political figures of the period reached newspapers, campaign material and national audiences. The head-and-shoulders pose, turned to the left, follows the conventions of formal studio portraiture of the era.
