Wendell Willkie, the Indiana-born lawyer and utilities executive who was the Republican nominee for president in 1940, is shown here in a head-and-shoulders study turned slightly to the left. Color photographic prints from this period were still relatively uncommon, which makes this one worth a closer look for its warm tones and careful composition. Willkie ran against Franklin D. Roosevelt that year and lost, but he became a notable public voice on foreign policy and internationalism during the years that followed.
