Elizabeth Montgomery, the actress best known for playing Samantha Stephens on the sitcom Bewitched, is the subject of this head-and-shoulders portrait taken in 1964, the year the show premiered on ABC. The sitter is turned slightly to the left, a common pose for studio portraiture of the era, when publicity photographs were used to build a performer's image for magazines and television listings. Montgomery, the daughter of actor Robert Montgomery, had worked in film and stage before Bewitched made her a household name, so the picture captures her at the start of that rise to fame.
