Shown in a head-and-shoulders view turned slightly to the left, this halftone portrait presents Sir Ernest Rutherford, the New Zealand-born physicist whose work revealed the atomic nucleus. His gold-foil experiments at Manchester around 1911 showed that an atom's mass and positive charge are concentrated in a tiny core, and in 1919 he became director of the Cavendish Laboratory at Cambridge. The halftone process, which broke a photograph into dots so it could be printed in newspapers and magazines, helped make portraits like this one a familiar way for the public to recognize scientists of his era.
