Sergeant Thomas Shaw appears in a tightly cropped, head-and-shoulders studio portrait, turned slightly to his left, made around 1900. The Library of Congress holds it as a detail from a larger lot of plates depicting Medal of Honor recipients. It comes from the Daniel Murray Collection, assembled by Murray, an assistant librarian at the Library, to document African American achievement, much of it gathered for the 1900 Paris Exposition. Black soldiers who earned the nation's highest military decoration in this era often served in segregated units on the frontier and in the Spanish-American War, and portraits like this one were meant to show their service and dignity to a wider public.
