Shown from the head and shoulders and turned slightly to the left, this sixth-plate daguerreotype is catalogued as an unidentified man, possibly William G. Mason. Small portraits like this were among the most common images of the 1840s, when studios in American cities made cased likenesses for sitters who could afford them. The silvered copper surface reflects like a mirror, so the image reverses from positive to negative as the viewer changes the angle. The Library acquired the plate in 1998 through the Marian S. Carson collection.
