A gilt-framed daguerreotype from 1858 shows a man whose name has been lost, and the case itself is part of what makes the object worth a closer look. Daguerreotypes were made on silver-coated copper plates, so the image sits on a mirror-like surface that shifts from positive to negative as the viewer tilts it. By the late 1850s the process was being overtaken by cheaper paper-based photography, yet portraits like this one remained popular, and the hinged, velvet-lined cases were prized as keepsakes carried or displayed in the home.
