A pair of unnamed sitters, a man and a woman, are caught here in a daguerreotype made around 1855, the year the process was already well past its peak in popularity but still the favored way for many American families to record their faces. Daguerreotypes were made on a silvered copper plate, so each one is a single, unrepeatable image that reflects like a mirror when tilted, and the glass-and-brass case that usually housed it was part of the object itself. Pictures like this were often kept in pairs or as keepsakes for loved ones, which is why portraits of two people from this period are so often treasured within families. Because the sitters are unidentified, the image rests on its materials and the conventions of the mid-1850s portrait studio, including the stiff poses and long exposure times that asked patience of everyone in front of the lens.
