A half-length daguerreotype from 1855 shows a woman whose name has been lost, yet her image survives in the small mirrored plate sealed inside its case. By the mid-1850s, the daguerreotype had been in use for roughly fifteen years and was the most popular form of portrait photography, prized for its sharp detail and for the way the surface shifts between a positive image and a reflective mirror as the viewer tilts it. Cased portraits like this one were often carried or kept in a family setting, which is why so many of them, like this one, survive without a record of who the sitter was.
