A sitter's face is the first thing to notice here, since this portrait is a daguerreotype made in 1855 and presented inside its original case, a detail that many surviving examples lack. Daguerreotypes were positive images on silvered copper plates, so each one is unique and cannot be reproduced as a print, and their mirror-like surfaces shift from positive to negative as the viewer tilts them. By the mid-1850s the process had been public for about sixteen years, and portraits like this one were a common way for ordinary families to record a parent or relative. The hinged case, usually leather, paper or brass-lined, helped protect the fragile surface from tarnish and scratches.
