Millicent Willson Hearst, wife of newspaper publisher William Randolph Hearst, appears here in a head-and-shoulders portrait turned slightly to the left. The Washington, D.C., studio Harris & Ewing made the picture around 1914, and its copyright registration suggests it was made for wider circulation, as studio portraits of prominent people often were. Millicent Hearst was known for her charitable work, especially for children's health, and portraits like this one helped build the public image of a society figure whose name carried weight in the press. The print shows the soft lighting and formal pose typical of studio portraiture in the 1910s.
