Christian A. Fleetwood (1840-1914) is shown here in a head-and-shoulders view, turned slightly to the left. He served as a sergeant major in the 4th U.S. Colored Infantry during the Civil War and received the Medal of Honor for his conduct at Chaffin's Farm in Virginia in September 1864, when he carried the regimental colors under heavy fire. This print comes from a group of Medal of Honor portraits gathered in the Daniel Murray Collection at the Library of Congress, where Murray assembled images documenting African American achievement. Such pictures were meant to show the public the faces of men who had earned the nation's highest military honor.
