Turned slightly to the left, Walt Whitman appears in this head-and-shoulders study dated 1891, the last full year before his death in 1892. By then the author of *Leaves of Grass* was living in Camden, New Jersey, where he had settled after a stroke in 1873 and where he sat for many of his late portraits. The print is tentatively attributed to Thomas Eakins or Samuel Murray, both of whom photographed him in Camden. It is part of the Feinberg-Whitman Collection at the Library of Congress, a large gathering of Whitman materials.
