Julia Dent Grant, wife of Ulysses S. Grant, sits for this head-and-shoulders portrait turned toward the left, a pose photographers of the era often used to show a sitter's profile and the line of the face. Julia Dent married Grant in 1848 and remained at his side through his Army career and his two terms as president, from 1869 to 1877, when she became one of the most visible first ladies of her day. The record dates the print only to a span between 1865 and 1885, so it reflects the studio portrait style of the Civil War era and the decades after. Portraits like this one were widely sold as cartes de visite and cabinet cards, which made the faces of public figures familiar to ordinary households.
