Shown in a head-and-shoulders view turned to the left, this portrait of John J. Raskob was distributed by Wide World Photos, a news picture service whose images moved quickly to newspapers. Around 1930, Raskob was one of the most visible business figures in the country. He had risen to a senior finance post at General Motors and was chairman of the Democratic National Committee, and he was closely tied to the building of the Empire State Building in New York. Press portraits of this kind were made to be reproduced in print, so the plain background and direct framing reflect the needs of newspaper layout.
