This head-and-shoulders portrait shows Vinnie Ream, who is named in the record as Hoxie in the title and as Ream in the subject heading, turned to the left. Ream became one of the best-known American sculptors of her day, and she was the first woman to win a federal commission for a statue when Congress approved her full-length marble of Abraham Lincoln for the Capitol. Portraits like this one, made around 1870, reflect the period when her reputation was rising and she was sitting for photographers as well as modeling busts and statues. The print is a useful record of how a working artist presented herself to the public in the years after the Civil War.
