This head-and-shoulders portrait shows a woman turned to the left, identified in the record only as Miss Gunning. The name points to the Gunning sisters, Irish-born beauties who became celebrities in mid-18th-century London, where crowds reportedly gathered to see them in public. This print is a photomechanical reproduction, made between 1850 and 1900, when new photographic printing methods let painted portraits circulate cheaply. The record credits the source image to an artist named Douloux, though that attribution is uncertain.
