A head-and-shoulders study of Mrs. A. R. Hancock, turned to the left, survives from the decades between 1866 and 1890, when the cabinet card had become the standard format for studio portraits. Cabinet cards were stiff mounted prints, roughly 4 by 6 and a half inches on card, and sitters of this period were often posed against painted backdrops with a draped table or chair at the edge of the frame. The record identifies only the sitter's married name, so little more can be said of her life with certainty. Her portrait still shows how middle-class American families used the photographic studio to preserve a likeness for the parlor or family album.
