Frederick Douglass appears here in a color lithograph, turned to his left in a head-and-shoulders view that frames him as a dignified public figure. Douglass (1818-1895) escaped slavery in Maryland as a young man and became one of the most prominent abolitionists, writers and orators of the nineteenth century, so a portrait like this would have circulated widely among readers who admired his work. Lithographic portraits of this kind were a popular way to spread the images of public men in the decades after the Civil War, when Douglass was active as a newspaper editor and as an advocate for civil rights and voting rights. The record gives only a general date range, so the exact occasion for the print is not known.
