Walter Fauntroy, photographed here in a head-and-shoulders portrait turned toward the left, is shown in a formal study that reflects his role as a congressional figure in the early 1970s. Fauntroy was the nonvoting delegate representing the District of Columbia in the U.S. House of Representatives, a post he held from 1971 to 1991, and he had earlier been a prominent civil rights leader and a close associate of Martin Luther King Jr. This portrait belongs to the Library of Congress's Congressional Portrait Collection, a series of images of members of Congress from the 1970s. Its profile pose and plain studio setting make it a useful record of how official portraiture of that era presented lawmakers.
