Charles I, who ruled England, Scotland and Ireland from 1625 until his execution in 1649, is shown here in a head-and-shoulders view turned to the left, a format engravers favored for royal likenesses because it could be reproduced cheaply and widely. This 19th-century engraving by Geoffroy is one of many later renderings of the king, whose reign ended in the English Civil War and the first trial and execution of a reigning monarch in British history. Printed in the century after his death, the image reflects how Charles was remembered in that era, often as a tragic figure. The record does not specify the source painting, so the likeness is best read as an interpretation rather than a firsthand portrait.
