This head-and-shoulders lithograph shows William J. Simmons in profile, facing left, and it was copyrighted by C.H. Parrish, the printer named in the record. Simmons was a Baptist minister and educator who led the State University in Louisville, Kentucky, and he compiled *Men of Mark* (1887), a collection of biographies of Black leaders in the decades after emancipation. He died in 1890, so a portrait dated around 1891 likely served as a memorial or was made to circulate his likeness among the readers and institutions that knew his work. Portraits like this one were a common way for African American communities of the period to honor their educators and public figures.
