Shown in a head-and-shoulders pose turned to his left, William Dutcher appears here in a small carte de visite, the mounted card format that was hugely popular in the 1870s and 1880s for inexpensive studio portraits. Dutcher (1846-1920) later became one of the most active figures in American bird protection, helping lead the early Audubon societies and working for federal protection of migratory birds. The print comes from the Ruthven Deane Collection, a group of cartes de visite that preserves the look of studio portraiture from this period.
