Taken at the Atelier Jaeger studio in Stockholm between 1900 and 1910, this card portrait shows Nils Gustaf Dalén turned to his left, head and shoulders in view. It predates his 1912 Nobel Prize in Physics, awarded for automatic regulators that let gas-lit lighthouses and buoys switch on and off without human attention. Cartes de visite like this small mounted print were a popular way to share a likeness across Europe from the 1860s onward. The sitter's name comes from the library's own cataloging rather than from the card itself.
