This is a head-and-shoulders portrait of George Henry Ragsdale (1845–1895), shown in profile facing left. The print is a copy made in 1909 from an earlier original, which the inscription on its back says was sent to the Library by Ragsdale's son in March of that year, so the picture reached the Library as a family keepsake rather than through a studio or publisher. The original portrait likely dates from the 1870s or 1880s, and the copy is part of the Ruthven Deane Collection, a group of historical portraits and related materials. Its survival through a relative's hands is what makes it worth noticing.
