Shown in a head-and-shoulders view turned to the left, Albert Jeremiah Beveridge appears here at about fifty, roughly a year after he left the United States Senate. He represented Indiana there from 1899 to 1911 and became a prominent voice for progressive Republican causes, including child labor laws and the regulation of large trusts. By 1912 he had joined the Progressive Party's campaign behind Theodore Roosevelt, and he later turned to writing, producing a multivolume biography of Chief Justice John Marshall.
