This head-and-shoulders portrait shows Hale Woodruff turned toward the left edge of the frame, with his gaze and posture carrying the composition. Woodruff (1900–1980) became known for his painted mural cycle on the Amistad revolt at Talladega College in Alabama, completed in 1939, and he came of age as an artist during the Harlem Renaissance. The caption card records no date, so the picture is best read as a portrait of a working artist of his generation rather than a record of any particular occasion.
