Facing left in a head-and-shoulders view, this portrait shows Peter I Karageorgevich, a sitter whose pose sets this image apart from many studio likenesses. Peter spent much of his early life in exile in Switzerland and France before the 1903 coup that ended the Obrenović dynasty brought him to the Serbian throne. He ruled as king of Serbia until 1918, then as king of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes until his death in 1921. The caption card gives no date, so the portrait is best understood within that span of his reign rather than fixed to a particular year.
