Shown in a head-and-shoulders view turned to the left, this portrait depicts LeRoy Percy, the Mississippi lawyer and Delta planter who lived from 1861 to 1929. Percy oversaw large cotton holdings around Greenville and became a prominent voice in state affairs in the early twentieth century, when the Delta was still shaped by plantation agriculture and tensions over race and labor. The record dates the photograph to about 1910, but that date comes from an unverified caption card and should be treated with some caution.
