Shown in a head-and-shoulders view facing left, Henry Leavitt Ellsworth appears here as a halftone reproduction published in the 1902 Yearbook of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, more than four decades after his death in 1858. Ellsworth served as Commissioner of Patents from 1836 to 1845, and under his direction the Patent Office began collecting agricultural statistics and distributing seeds to farmers, work that helped lay the groundwork for the department. By 1902, the halftone process, which let printers reproduce photographs alongside type, had become common in government reports, so this portrait reflects both the era's printing methods and the yearbook's effort to recognize early agricultural leaders.
