A formal head-and-shoulders study of Bess Truman, turned to her left, comes from the Washington studio Harris & Ewing, which made many official portraits of government figures and their families. Bess Wallace grew up in Independence, Missouri, alongside Harry Truman, and she was known for avoiding the spotlight. Portraits like this one, taken as her husband moved from the Senate to the vice presidency and then the presidency, show a composed, reserved bearing that suited her temperament.
